This spring, Rachel was running her food truck on the side of the road in Anderson, South Carolina. She is a grandmother, a hard worker, and a steady support for her family. While she served customers that day, a truck pulled in and a young woman stepped out. Something in the woman’s face told Rachel she might not be safe. Rachel asked if she was alright. The woman insisted she was fine, but Rachel still offered her number and told the woman to reach out if she ever needed help.
A few months later, Rachel received a call. The woman was in labor. She had no one to take her to the hospital and asked if Rachel could meet her. Rachel didn’t hesitate to help. She got her to the hospital, stayed close by, and soon baby Andrew was born. Moments later, the mother shared that she could not care for her child and asked Rachel if she could step in. That same day, baby Andrew was placed in Rachel’s guardianship.
Rachel already helps raise several of her own grandchildren, yet she opened her home and heart again. When the weight of caring for a newborn and a busy household started to grow, she reached out for support. The Anderson Pregnancy Center connected her to Fostering the Family, and your generosity made it possible for us to respond. We are in the process of building a support team around her, in the meantime helping meet urgent needs and providing care, supplies, and encouragement.
Rachel has shared again and again how grateful she is for the support she received. She says it made the difference between feeling alone and feeling connected.
We invite you to help us continue saying “yes” to families like Rachel’s. Your giving strengthens caregivers. It creates stability for vulnerable children. And it ensures that babies like Andrew are met with love the moment they enter the world.
